Johann van der Walt's exhibition

Tattoo and Canvas Magazine rushed through to Pretoria to interview Johann van der Walt and Royston Chapman at Chapman's Emporium where Karen de Waal is hosting an exhibition of Johann's paintings. Johann, Pretoria born and bred,  is delightful and his work has a voice of its own. Once we had phototgraphed and chatted to Royston, off we went to find our artist.

Eloquent as Johann is, in our twenty minute interview, he never managed to express as much as the least striking of his paintings and Johann has no problems expressing himself verbally. After I had shut down my sophisticated recording equipment (my cell phone), Johann explained why he does not name his paintings. Having enjoyed staring at his paintings for a couple of hours, I must concur that labeling them may well have curtailed my flights of fantasy and that is what this artist gives as part of the imagery gift: a journey of personal whimsy in wholly un-whimsical work. By allowing the viewer to experience his work without preconceived boundaries, he sets us free to enjoy and discover from within, giving the space to interpret as we choose, feel what we choose.

Johann gave himself the mammoth task of painting a massive mural Scotland (a post matric sabbatical), choosing to work in oils, which he had never used before. Five months later, he understood the medium better than he ever would other wise.

A transcript of our interview follows:
When did you start drawing and painting?
I was very young
Where does your inspiration come from?
Everywhere: I love shape, I love texture.
I started working on hardboard, working with texture, building up with texture. (the large square painting at the bottom). Recently I have moved more towards working on canvas, finding it easier on the flatter less texture surface to create detail. The work in the Chapman's Emporium Gallery is all new work, completed in the last three months.
Do you work on several pieces at once?
Yes, usually about three to four paintings.

The Mafia warm-up Party

For the first time in years, I immersed myself in some psychedelic music, transcended the everyday dishes and school runs, finding myself suspended by tunes. Tattooed and tattoo-free bodies swam the psychedelic puddle (something like primordial soup, but a lot faster at pushing out new critters) around me. Thanks to Iona and Derren for putting this together.

In terms of the music, I had better not say too much. I am simply not qualified other than to say I really enjoyed Ryan Davis ( aka Trip)'s set and I had a good stomp as Starspine (Jacques Coetzee) took us on an exquisite journey down memory lane.

The only tattoo artist that I knew at the party was Royston Chapman from Chapman's Tattoo Studio in Pretoria www.chapmans.co.za. While there were a few collectors with some lovely work, the photography Gremlins got at us. I remember that he listed Chainsaw, Moog, Graham and Cameron as his favourite artists. I’m not sure how to reach Graeme, Chainsaw and Cameron, but Moog can be found on FB under Moog Mushrooms and examples of his work are on show. If any one can update me regarding the other artists, please do.

Tat – toodle – do till next time.
